WISAM AL-SAMAD (b.1968, IRAQ)
Al-Samad is a ceramic artist based in Askim, Norway. Working primarily with ceramic wall works and sculptural installations, he combines hand-built forms, high-fired stoneware, glazes, and calligraphic elements to create rhythmic and tactile compositions.
His practice draws on the ancient ceramic traditions and visual language of Mesopotamia, while incorporating references to Norwegian landscapes and cultural heritage. Through geometric forms, Arabic calligraphy, repetition, and fragmentation, Al-Samad explores themes of identity, belonging, memory, and the connections between different cultures.
Al-Samad has exhibited extensively in Norway and internationally, including at KRAFT in Bergen, RAM Galleri in Oslo, and international ceramic biennials and festivals.
He holds a Bachelor’s degree in ceramics from the University of Baghdad and an art diploma from the Institute of Fine Arts in Baghdad.
